This series of images describes a progression, from the happy accident of one particularly luscious paint palette, to an ongoing practice of painting out, towards an imagined context from the singular remains of a used paper palette. Palettes are cut into one or several pieces--some organically, some orthogonally, and some using both approaches. Each is positioned to establish a spatial premise. My challenge is to discover a visual logic that makes it believable.
I am attracted to the specificity of each palette, containing puddles and piles of paint, understandable as small spots or as vast landscapes, full of mystery and surprising detail. From these palettes, I try to elaborate contexts. I think of the painted surrounds as landscapes, seen in perspective or as if flying. At the same time, I hope to catch a glimpse of other figures within each painting, as I engage in the imaginative act of peripheral scanning. I seek the moment when a mountain range becomes a bird in flight.
